DEVELOP A WHOLESOME CONSCIENCE

30th NOVEMBER 2021

“For our proud confidence is this: the testimony of our conscience, that in holiness and godly sincerity, not in fleshly wisdom but the grace of God, we have conducted ourselves in the world and especially toward you” – 2 Corinthians 1:12

God talks to us, and we hear him through the voice of conscience. The conscience is an inbuilt mechanism in us to enable us to detect the voice of God. The scripture says God has written His word in the tablet of our hearts. That means that God’s laws and His word are written in our hearts, and in these latter days, we are expected to sieve out God’s word and laws from our hearts – through the conscience.

Unfortunately, our consciences have been silenced or polluted by our cultural, religious and educational beliefs of what we think is right or wrong. The word of God is telling us today to be careful of false teachings, which are against the nature of God and His word. For instance, some say there is no difference between good and evil; this is not entirely correct – for indeed, there are things that every child of God must not do. Jesus Christ came to set standards for what constitutes sound moral judgment.

For instance, Jesus did not believe in vengeance and said we must forgive always. Jesus did not believe in human torture, so he prevented the woman found guilty of adultery from being stoned to death. Jesus did not believe in retaliation, and so he says we must offer to be slapped twice no matter the situation. Jesus Christ is God, and whatever He says is final on questions of morality.

It follows, therefore, that your conscience should not say anything different from the teachings of Jesus Christ. Our consciences often tend to direct us on the right paths, but our false beliefs usually silence it regarding what is right. To act against the voice of conscience is to dive into errors and sinfulness. Resurrect your conscience today by developing a sense of right belief in God and His word.

Have you allowed your conscience to become dirty and damaged? We can still restore our conscience. Forsake sin; seek forgiveness and reconciliation from all those you have wronged. For us to be right with God, we must be right with our neighbours, Matt. 5:23-24; 6:14-15; Make restitution to those you have wronged if possible. If you have violated your conscience by ignoring its voice, deal with your guilt immediately. If you have a conscience that is easily broken, train it in the things of the Lord. Feed it with the pure Word of God and not the teachings and traditions of men.

PRAYER

Father in the name of Jesus Christ, purify my conscience, sanctify my body and mind and bring me into perfect union with thee always. I declare that from this day onward, thy spirit will abide in my conscience, motivate my actions, and your word will be on my lips. AMEN.
