“The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.” - Exodus 14:14
William Penn, an influential English religion preacher and the founder of the North American state of Pennsylvania in 1682 said;
“In the rush and noise of life, as you have intervals, step home within yourselves and be still. Wait upon God, and feel His good presence; this will carry you evenly through your day’s business.”
In today’s scripture, we see God’s word validating what William Penn said several years ago. Why do we have to be calm, or listen to God talk to us anyway? It is because God’s word is spirit and life. It heals every wound and goes through every barrier to bring succor and healing. To be still and to listen to God, especially when we are in pain or troubled is a difficult process; but we have to learn to look beyond our pains and sorrows and focus on God just for one minute, at least. Only then would we begin to experience a supernatural shift from pain and trauma to a state of peace and fulfillment. While I acknowledged that some bad situations may not be reversed, such as bereavement, nevertheless, we deserve freedom from emotional pain and trauma so we can live our normal life again. Only God can set us free at that point. You will observe that in certain cases, we seem to experience a prolonged emotional stress and troubles, even with the passage of time; that is one of the tricks of the devil to ensure that we do not return to normal life.
The mystery of God, however, is that His spirit is capable of working in us to heal our pains no matter the degree of our losses, but we must be still to enable Him fight for us, and to administer His healing balm on us. Starting from today, instead of listening to the noise of your worries, listen to the voice of the Lord. We are not to let our sorrow overwhelm us; otherwise, we might sink into depression. One of the major causes of depression is the inability to control emotion in times of pain and sorrow. The good news is that, Christ in us is the hope of glory, and is always able to perfect everything concerning us. Jesus Christ has demonstrated His powers over storms by calming the sea so Peter was able to walk on the waves of the storming sea (Matthew 14:22 - 33) Jesus Christ remains the same. Our God remains loyal, omnipotent, and loving. Allow Jesus to minister to your pains, troubles and sorrows; be still, stop paying attention to the storm, otherwise you may sink just like Peter did. God is telling you today that He is always in control of every of your problem, but would only start the work of healing and restoration only if you appreciate His presence, remain calm and still to receive His word. God’s word is spirit and life.
