“For our proud confidence is this: the testimony of our conscience, that in holiness and godly sincerity, not in fleshly wisdom but in the grace of God, we have conducted ourselves in the world and especially toward you” - 2 Corinthians 1:12
The conscience is inbuilt mechanisms in us to enable us detect the voice of God. God talks to us, and we hear him through the voice of conscience. The scripture says God has written His word in the tablet of our hearts. This means that God’s laws and His word is written in our hearts, and in these later days, we are expected to sieve out God’s word and laws from our hearts – through the conscience. Unfortunately, our consciences have been silenced or polluted by our cultural, religious and educational beliefs of what we think is right or wrong. The word of God is telling us today to be careful of wrong teachings, which are against the nature of God and His word. For instance, some say there is no difference between good and bad, this is not entirely correct – for certainly, there are things that every child of God must not do. Jesus Christ came to set standards for what constitutes sound moral judgment. For instance, Jesus did not believe in vengeance and says we must forgive always. Jesus did not believe in human torture, and so he prevented the woman found guilty of adultery from being stoned to death..
Jesus did not believe in retaliation, and so he says we must offer to be slapped twice no matter the situation. Jesus Christ is God, and whatever He says is final on questions of morality. It follows therefore that your conscience should not say anything different from the teachings of Jesus Christ. Very often, our consciences tend to direct us on the right paths, but it is usually silenced by our false beliefs regarding what is right. To act against the voice of conscience is to dive into errors and sinfulness. Resurrect your conscience today by developing a sense of right belief in God and His word. Have you allowed your conscience to become dirty and damaged? It can be restored. Forsake sin; seek forgiveness and reconciliation from all those you have wronged. For us to be right with God, we must be right with our neighbours, Matt. 5:23-24; 6:14-15; Make restitution to those you have wronged if possible. If you have violated your conscience by ignoring its voice, deal with your guilt immediately. If you have a conscience that is easily violated, train it in the things of the Lord. Feed it with the pure Word of God and not the teachings and traditions of men.
