REFLECTION

In Matthew 20:28, Jesus offers a profound truth that shatters the conventional pursuit of abundance. He declares, “Just as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” This verse flips the script on our understanding of success and fulfilment. True abundance, Jesus suggests, lies not in acquiring but in giving, not in being served but in serving.

Think about it. When we focus solely on accumulating wealth and possessions, we enter a never-ending cycle of desire and lack. The more we have, the more we crave. But a different magic unfolds when we shift our focus to serving others. We discover deep wells of joy, connection, and purpose that material possessions can never satisfy.

This concept isn’t just some feel-good notion. Service and contribution have tangible benefits. Studies show that helping others reduces stress, boosts happiness, and fosters a sense of belonging. It strengthens communities, creates positive change, and leaves a lasting impact far beyond ourselves.

As we embark on 2024, let’s embrace the transformative power of service. Let’s move beyond the narrow pursuit of personal gain and step into the abundance that comes from giving our time, talents, and resources to uplift others.

PRAYERS

Dear Lord, open our hearts to the true meaning of abundance. Help us move beyond self-centred desires and discover the joy of serving others. Guide us to use our talents and resources to uplift those in need and create a more just and loving world. Amen.

TAKE ACTION

Dedicate 30 minutes today to serving someone in need. Volunteer at a local charity, mentor a young person, offer help to a neighbour, or listen attentively to a friend. Witness the joy that comes from giving, and watch abundance blossom in unexpected ways.
